About our Worship Gatherings

Our worship gatherings are simple, focused on Christ, and meant to be accessible to you whether you’ve been in church your whole life or never been to church at all. We regularly explain the elements of our service and you are free to participate as you feel comfortable.

Each gathering has a mix of historical and contemporary elements, everything done decently and in order, hopefully pulling the best from the old and the new. We think less in terms of the false “contemporary versus traditional” dichotomy and more in terms of including both formative and expressive elements of worship without chronological snobbery.

We encourage everyone to participate heartily in our worship experience. There will be times to sing, pray, read, listen to God’s word proclaimed, and respond together as a community. The form and flow of our liturgy is designed to help us practice the pattern of the gospel by both forming us into a gospel community and providing opportunities for us to express our affections for Jesus Christ.

What do you DO during your worship gatherings?

Typical elements in our worship include a welcome, call to worship, singing, prayers, a sermon, and so on. We celebrate the Lord’s Supper weekly, acknowledging that our worship gatherings are more FEAST than lecture. Our services normally last about an hour and 15 minutes. CLICK HERE to listen to sermons on line and HERE for some recordings of our music.

Where are you located? How do I get there?

Where do I park?

Part of meeting at building in an “urban light” neighborhood is limited parking. Our parking lot and the Sharpsburg parking lot are accessible via the driveway on Washington Ave.

Parking is first come, first served and there are a number of churches in our immediate area.

You will want to arrive early and if the weather is fair and you are close enough, you might even consider walking or riding your bike!

We have a number of on-site parking including several spot reserved for those with special needs

Sharpsburg Elementary: This parking lot is available for parking and is connected to our property by a driveway and sidewalk.

There are a few dedicated spots for church parking along Washington Ave. between Floral Ave. and the church building’s driveway.

On-street parking is probably the best option. There is plentiful on street parking within a few blocks of the church building and it ought to be utilized by anyone capable of doing so. This entire map represents parking options that are within about a 2 minute walk of 4400 Floral Ave. If possible, please avoid parking on Washington past the church driveway, leaving the narrow street accessible to residents.

Note: Please respect our neighbors by parking with courtesy (i.e. not taking up two spots, blocking/cramming driveways, don't block crosswalks, etc.). Also, be aware of all parking signage, fire hydrants, etc.

What is there for kids and students?

We offer classes each week for children ages infant-6th grade at 9a & 10:45a but kids of all ages are welcome to join our worship service. Kindergarten and up stays with the grown ups in the worship service until just before the sermon. Worship bags with activities for children are available at the New City Kids Check-In Station located in the Commons.

If you would like to pre-register your kid(s) for a smoother, quicker check in you can do that here

We have space at the back of the sanctuary with a full glass wall and audio feed so that parents with wiggly kids can still feel connected to the worship service. There is an activity center where your babies/toddlers can play, and mom/dad can listen to the sermon.  On the 2nd level there's a nursing mom's room with a diaper-changing station; there are also diaper-changing stations in both the men's and women's first floor restrooms.

If you’re in 7th-12th grade consider this your invitation to hop in with New City Student Ministry. Students gather on most Wednesday nights at 6:30p at the church building for time to hang out with one another, worship God, and study his Word. NCSM also does tons of other stuff throughout the year so don’t hesitate to join us! Check Church Center for the current calendar and/or contact Zach Meyer or for more information about NCSM.

What should I wear?

There’s no standard or expectation for what to wear. At New City, you’ll see people in jeans, mostly. Wear what you’d like! Is not life more important than clothing? Your presence is what’s important to us. Come and join us.

What's the preaching like?

We aim to be intelligent and intelligible. Our preaching is Jesus centered, expository preaching. We tend to preach our way through books of the Bible in order. Explore the archives, take a listen!
