Meals With Jesus

How would you complete the sentence “The Son of Man came _________________”? The Son of Man came… preaching the word… to establish the kingdom of God… to die on the cross? All true, but the New Testament explicitly completes that sentence in three ways. “The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). “The Son of Man came to seek and save the lost” (Luke 19:10). “The Son of Man has come eating and drinking…” (Luke 7:34) The first two are statements of purpose: why Jesus came. But the third is a statement of method: how he came? Jesus came eating and drinking. A lot. So much so that his opponents called him a glutton and a drunkard. When you read the Gospels, you can’t get away from meals. Robert Karris comments: “In Luke’s Gospel Jesus is either going to a meal, at a meal, or coming from a meal.” This series of sermons looks at some of these meals with Jesus recorded in the Gospels. We’ll see how these meals are windows into Jesus’ ministry of grace, community and mission.
