Ojos de Dios.JPG

We will soon be starting a sermon series on 1 Corinthians 13, we want to invite our New City Kids to join us in creating another piece of art in collaboration with our church family!

HERE is a special NCK version of the printable made by Pastor Brian with the statement “Love ________.”

Help your child think through...

  • How they have been challenged to love better during these weeks of the COVID-19 quarantine.
  • How they have been loved well by others during this difficult season.

Please help your child fill in the blank, using one of the descriptors of love from I Corinthians 13!

(Included in the printable are several versions of 1 Corinthians 13 that you can make use of to help your kids complete the sentence. Please be sure to use only descriptors from 1 Corinthians 13 to complete the sentence.)

The NCK version of "Love Is" has special block letters for the kids to color, decorate or paint!  Encourage your child to be creative and have fun making their project beautiful!

Once your paper is finished, take a photo of your paper. Then, email your photo to abby.murrish@newcitycincy.org.

Here are some tips to get a great photos:

  • Lay the paper flat on the floor or table.
  • Make sure there’s plenty of natural light.
  • Take the photo on landscape mode.
  • Leave a bit of space around the edges of the paper.

Bonus: if you’d like, take a picture or short video (5 seconds or less) of yourself holding your paper and email that along with your photo of your paper. We might use your photo in our web and social media presence.

We are excited to see how our New City Kids tells us ways in which they love or feel loved!  Thank you for being a part of this collaborative art project!

Helpful Face Mask Tips! https://www.newcitycincy.org/new-city-kids-blog/post/from-nck---helpful-face-mask-tips https://www.newcitycincy.org/new-city-kids-blog/post/from-nck---helpful-face-mask-tips#comments Fri, 08 May 2020 13:00:00 -0400 https://www.newcitycincy.org/new-city-kids-blog/post/from-nck---helpful-face-mask-tips Dear NCK Parents,

We're quickly approaching some re-opening dates in the state of Ohio!

May 12 - Retail stores

May 15 - Salons, Barbershops, Outdoor dining

May 21 - Indoor dining

As we begin to prepare our families to venture out into the public again, we would like to provide you with some resources for mask-wearing, specifically for our New City Kids!

Click here to watch this helpful mask-wearning story!

Also, the CDC has provided instructions on how to wear a face mask as well as instructions on how to make them....click here!

The NCK Team would like to thank NCK parent and occupational therapy assistant Rachel Bonar for providing us the helpful information below:

*Working through trauma triggers related to mask wearing*
created by Carolyn Fitzgibbon, adapted by Breanna Lynch; April 2020

For clients with a trauma history (and many other reasons), wearing a mask can be triggering.  Here are some things to consider if a client's finding the need to wear a mask/face covering especially challenging:

1. Find a sensory modulation technique that they find grounding and
will bring them back from any flashbacks/memories/triggers a
sympathetic response; eg using the dive reflex, safe scent, holding
something frozen, music, etc. Practice this when regulated to ensure
it is grounding.

2. Start to discuss the differences between using a mask and why it is not like the trauma sensations; eg a mask is for safety, you have
complete control over taking it on or off, you can breath while the
mask is on. * Include education about how the brain is trained to look for similarities/bring up thoughts based on past experiences, but pointing out the differences will promote safety.

3. Discuss the mask sensation that insights discomfort.  Look for
masks that are not tight over the mouth or have a different way of
providing protection; eg a face shield or a mask that is over the
bridge of the nose, but is loose from there down so that it is not
tight, and infinity scarf, etc.  Think about something that could be
taken off quickly and easily, eg the mask is tied on with a sort of
headband that can be lifted off. Different masks may be needed for a
graded exposure.

4. Try exploring scents that are safe, and remind your client of the
present moment. The scent could be put onto the material or perhaps
near the nose (depending on the scent) .

5. Remind your client that they can still breathe and use their mouth.
They could try chewing a strong mint or gum.

6. Look at how they would use the sensory modulation techniques in
combination with the mask.

7. Look at a graded introduction to the mask: touch the mask, try it
over the nose but not over the mouth for 3 seconds (over several
sessions or days) in a therapy session, etc.  Use a rehearsed safety
script; eg “I am in the present moment and I am safe.  I am trying on
a mask as I want to and I have complete control over this sensation.”

Happy Monday New City Parents!

The NCK team would like to recommend some books for you as we head into Holy Week and Easter weekend.

Ages 0-5

Holy Week: An Emotions Primer

Your family will love this unique board book! Using colorful, engaging artwork, Holy Week introduces little ones to a wide range of emotions as they follow Jesus through the final week of His life.  Children will delight in the beautiful illustrations and learn about basic emotions, such as joy, anger, sadness, fear, and more.  And they will become familiar with one of the final chapters in Jesus's story here on earth. You will appreciate the artistic design, theologically sound content, and helping your little one understand that emotions are created by God and that they are good.

God Gave Us Easter

As Little Cub celebrates Easter with Papa, Mama, and her brother and sister, she begins to ask her papa questions about this very special day of the year.  Papa lovingly explains God’s plans for his children, while taking Little Cub on a memorable walk through her stunning Arctic world, and he shares how Easter came about in clear, simple terms that even the littlest cubs can understand.

Ages 5 - 12

The Garden, the Curtain and the Cross

This beautifully illustrated hardback book takes children on a journey from the garden of Eden to God’s perfect new creation.  Retelling the Easter story through a Bible overview, children will discover that ‘because of our sin, we can't go in’ but because of Jesus’ victory on the cross, an even better garden awaits us...

The Garden, the Curtain and the Cross Coloring & Activity Book

32 pages of coloring, puzzles, mazes and activities for children.  Use alongside The Garden, the Curtain & the Cross to discover the story of the whole Bible.

Read-Aloud Bible Stories, Vol. 2

The award-winning Read Aloud Bible Stories series has delighted children, parents, and teachers for decades. Written by Ella K. Lindvall and illustrated by Kent Puckett, these timeless stories of the Bible are retold in clear, simple language children will enjoy and understand. And parents will appreciate the care taken to simplify the stories without sacrificing any accuracy.  Perfect for reading aloud or for early readers themselves, Read Aloud Bible Stories are a great way to ingrain God's truth into your child's heart early on. Plus, the 'What Did You Learn?' page at the end of every story helps children understand how God's Word applies to them today.

The Berenstain Bears: The Very First Easter

Featuring the precious artwork that has made The Berenstain Bears a treasured childhood favorite for nearly six decades, see the very first Easter from the heartwarming Berenstain Bear’s point of view—from Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem to the Last Supper to the risen Lord’s first appearance on Easter Sunday.

For the Whole Family

The Tale of Three Trees: A Traditional Folktale

Featuring the wonderful illustrations of Tim Jonke, this best-selling children's book tells the Easter story from a new and unusual point of view. Children will be deeply touched as they understand, perhaps for the first time, the significance of Christ's life and his atoning sacrifice on the cross.

Jesus Storybook Bible - Holy Week Reading Plan

From the blog "Home with the Boys"...

We read through just five stories for this Easter week with the Jesus Storybook Bible, but they are just the right ones to focus our hearts in the right place – Jesus!  I have included a few VERY simple activities & discussion ideas to go along with each reading. Including reading time, you’ll be done in 30 minutes or less each day. There is a printable outline of the week for you to keep as a handy reference as well!

The Wonder of Easter

Take ten minutes with your family each day to prepare for Easter.  This flexible, easy-to-use Lent devotional will allow both adults and children to celebrate the limitless wonder of Easter. Walk through Luke’s Gospel and the Old Testament to discover why the story of Jesus' death and resurrection is the most amazing story ever told.  This is a discussion-based resource with differentiated questions for 3-4s, 5-7s, 7-12s, teens and adults! At just 10 minutes each, these devotions are an achievable joy, not an unrealistic burden.
There are five devotions for each week. If you can't get to it every day, that's alright. Stuff happens. We hope that if you miss one you can pick it up again easily. You might discover that five a week is an unrealistic target—if so, some studies have been marked as KEY to help you choose which ones to pick.

Feel free to leave any book suggestions you might have in the comments!  Happy Reading!

The New City Kids team has put together a blog just for you.  We are excited for this new way to connect with you and your kids!

The purpose of the blog is to provide extra ideas and encouragement to you and your family throughout the year.  Examples of content will be book ideas and book reviews, seasonal crafts, helpful hints for travel, ideas for fun places to explore in Cincinnati and thoughts on Christian parenting.  (Our regular Sunday class notes and curriculum will not be housed here...please continue to look to your Sunday morning liturgry or Church Center Parent Groups for those materials.)

In light of the current home church situation, we will begin the launch of the NCK blog with activity suggestions for your family throughout Holy Week and Easter.  Even though we will not be able to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord together in person, we can be connected through shared activities!

We hope you join us at noon this Sunday, April 5th as we will have a special passing of the peace and Hosanna chorus for our New City Kids!  The session will begin with the kids having time to greet one another and will end with the Hosanna Chorus.  (Please see the NCK parent email or the Sunday morning liturgy for the meeting invite.)

In lieu of having real palm branches this year, we encourage your family to consider making them. We have provided a couple of different options.  Also, check out the Hosanna streamer craft!  CLICK HERE for helpful instructions.

Please check back next week for some fun things to do with your family in preparation for Easter Sunday!

With Love and Care,

The New City Kids Team
