Whiz Kids Volunteer Opportunities
Whiz Kids is a literacy-based, one-to-one tutoring and mentoring program, reaching out to serve over 1,200 at risk youth in 54 locations in Greater Cincinnati.
This year New City is partnering with Whiz Kids to help tutor and mentor children at John P Parker School. We hope you'll consider some ways you might get involved.
The biggest need is for TUTORS. You will be matched with a student, given training and materials, and then you'll start meeting with your student. As Mary Brzozowski (site coordinator for Parker) says, "Our focus is not just academic - we believe that the relationship between the tutor and student is the most important part of Whiz Kids. Many of our kids have never had an adult to care about how they are doing or to encourage them."
Tutoring is a commitment of an hour and fifteen minutes per week. Tutoring slots are as follows:
- Tuesdays 2:15-3:30pm (grades 1-5); 3:45-5:00pm (grades 6-8)
- Thursdays 2:15-3:30pm (grades 1-5); 3:45-5:00pm (grades 6-8)
If you're interested in tutoring, please contact Mary Brzozowski right away. There will be a new tutor training session on September 27 from 5:15-6:30pm in the library at Parker School.
If tutoring isn't your thing, there are other opportunities to be involved. See the list of needs below and contact Mary to let her know how you can help out.
