December Calendar and New Sermon Series
Just wanted to give you an update on all that is happening in the Advent season here at New City. If you were at our gathering last Sunday, you know we closed out the series on Joel and kicked off the Advent season with candles, readings and carols. There's more of the same to come during worship over the next few weeks. But here are a few things we wanted to draw your attention to.
:: The Madisonville Christmas Store is this Saturday December 3 from 2-4pm. Thanks to all who contributed gifts for the store and have done lost of pre-work to make it happen. If you signed up to serve on Saturday, make sure to be there! And pray that God would use this event to bless people and further our cooperation with New Life Temple, and help in develoiping relationships within the community. Info and directions to New Life Temple can be found here.
:: Christmas Party and Carol Sing - Sunday Dec 11, 6-8pm at Red Tree Gallery in Oakley. Make sure and join us for our Christmas party. There will be lots of great Christmas treats and coffee and cocoa are on us. We'll also have a band there leading us in some great carols. Families are welcome, and this a fantastic event to invite friends to.
:: Christmas Eve Service - A service of Lessons and Carols, Dec 24 from 5:30-6:40pm at Cincinnati Mennonite Fellowship (4229 Brownway Ave, 45209). The service itself is patterned (loosely) on the Lessons and Carols service held each year at the Kings College Chapel in Cambridge, England. I say "loosely" because their service is much longer (the program is something like 50 pages!). I promise you we'll be done in just over an hour! Our service will be full of great Christmas carols interspersed with seven readings telling the story of Christmas. There will be a short meditation, and we'll close the service with the lighting of candles and singing "Silent Night." There won't be child care, but kids of all ages are welcome in the service. We'll have a nursery room open in the back if you'd like to stay back there for some or all of the service with your child. Oh, and special guest Mike Woods will be leading music with our worship band that night!
:: No worship on Christmas Day. Christmas falls on a Sunday this year. And since so many of you will be out of town visiting family, and we didn't want the custodians from Parker to have to work on Christmas, we decided not to meet on Christmas Day. So, just make sure and come out to the Christmas Eve service on Saturday night.
:: Family Worship on January 1. New Year's Day is also on a Sunday, and we will meet for worship as normal - 10am at Parker School. However, we'll be giving our Children's Ministry workers a break on that day, so we'll have more kiddos than normal in the worship service with us. So we'll scale things down a bit and try and be done by 11:00am. We'll have a room with toys open if parents want to step out with a child, but we will not have childcare workers on duty that morning.
:: Songs for Christmas - Lastly, we're starting a new sermon series this weekend called "Songs for Christmas" from the first 2 chapters of Luke's Gospel. Those chapters almost read like a musical, as everyone seems to be breaking into song. Josh will be speaking on Zechariah's Song this weekend, then Simeon's Song on 12/11. Dave Dupee will be walking us through Mary's Song on 12/18, and we'll consider the Song of the Angels during the Christmas Eve service. These are great weeks to invite friends and neighbors to church with you.
